Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long beach on 24 August 1972. DuVernay was able to explore her creative and artistic side in her early years, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay was instructed by her mom that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay had her summers spent in Lowndes County Alabama, where the father of DuVernay was born and raised. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in adjacent Selma Alabama. The time spent in Selma, Alabama during the summer, inspired her later to direct a movie about The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended an institution called the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with qualifications in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay developed an interest in journalistic broadcasting while in school. She began her career as an assistant to CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to observe the house of one member of the jury and look through their trash. Her work left her dissatisfied with journalism so she decided to shift her focus towards the field of publicity. DuVernay started her first job as a publicist in small production studios right out of high school. The DuVernay Agency is her first public relations agency. She also started several lifestyles and promotional networks, including Urban Beauty Collective. Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful, and Urban Thought Collective. Her fame is due to her role as Anna Payne in American Experience, (1987) A More Perfect Union and A More Perfect Union (2009). Autumn appeared as Rose as Rose in A More Perfect Union, as well as Anna Payne in American Experience.
